Trip to North Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, and South Dakota
June 2001 - Page Three

The storms were over by early evening, so we were able to take  a sunset walk around Sylvan Lake in northern Custer State Park.

Some of you will appreciate that I took these close-up photos of this young buck deer.  :)  Ok, so he's a young thing with fuzzy antlers...but I did take the pictures myself from within 15 feet of him!

Custer State Park is known for its herd of "wild" burros that live in the Wildlife Loop area.

Chances are pretty good that if you drive the road, they'll be standing in the middle of it, ready to stick their heads into your car, or nuzzle you if you get out of your car.

The Bighorn Sheep were lounging along the side of the road, too!

Much like the burros, there is a particular spot in the park where you can usually see these sheep near sunset.

Way back in 1994, I made my original web page, and the picture I chose to put at the top is from the Wildlife Loop area of Custer State Park and the adjacent Wind Cave National Park.  Here are some new pictures of the same area.

I took a most wonderful hike through the Badlands National Park.  If you have the opportunity to hike the 5-mile Castle Trail, do so!  My hike began at 4:30pm, and went west to east.  It was only 73 degrees and not a cloud in the sky.  Perfect!

And finally, one of my favorite views...the Missouri River where it is crossed by I-90.  I have sunset and morning photos.

And a picture of the "new" truck, as this trip was completely intended to test it out on some "bad" roads out in the Dakotas!
